  • The oral exam at the end of a PhD, Where you defend your thesis to two examiners, usually one from your univeristy and one external.
  • In the UK, these are typically 2-4 hours long; closed-door, just you and the examiners without your supervisors to help

from Latin: viva voce, “with the living voice” - i.e. spoken, not written.
